Awareness Raising Training for National Union of Plantation Workers

Participants from the Melaka training session

The MY Voice team organised a series of training sessions for members of the National Union of Plantation Workers (NUPW) under the Branch and Local Level Leaders’ Training programme.

NUPW is one of the largest workers’ unions in Malaysia. It aims to improve the quality of life of plantation workers through collective action and to promote the industrial, social, and intellectual interests of its members.

From July to November 2024, MY Voice trained 229 NUPW members across Kedah, Pahang, Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Kelantan, Perak, and Terengganu.

The trainings were for NUPW leaders at the branch and grassroots levels and aimed to:

  • increase awareness and build capacity on topics related to forced labor, child labor, anti-discrimination, and effective communication; and
  • introduce the Just Good Work Worker Voice App

The training provided participants with the definition, concepts, principles, national legislation, and some case studies and activities on non-discrimination, forced labor, child labor, and effective communication. Additionally, MY Voice introduced the Just Good Work app, aiming to empower union members to make informed decisions by giving them easy access to latest labor rights information.

These trainings are designed to provide participants with basic knowledge about their labor rights. By raising awareness, they will empower workers to more proactively identify and address labor rights violations, utilizing the trade union as a key grievance mechanism to advocate for their rights and seek resolution.
